Hogan Engineer II

Job Overview

PenFed is hiring a (Hybrid) Hogan Engineer II at our Tysons, Virginia location. The primary purpose of this role is to participate in technical analysis, design, and implementation of Hogan application enhancements and production fixes in a core banking environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain COBOL programs and JCL with guidance from senior engineers; support API integration points and system integration efforts.
  • Execute SDLC activities including requirements analysis, technical design, coding, unit testing, and UAT support, translating business requirements into technical specifications for assigned Hogan modules.
  • Participate in Technical Review Board and peer review processes, ensuring adherence to coding standards, project deliverables, and success criteria.
  • Provide production support for batch failures, online transaction issues, and data reconciliation discrepancies; troubleshoot and resolve hardware or software failures in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with Senior technicians on design solutions for system modifications involving Hogan modules, database structures (VSAM), and batch processing frameworks through phased implementation approaches.
  • Collaborate in technical discussions with business stakeholders, IT team members, and vendors to support project initiatives and resolve technical challenges.
  • Follow change management and incident management protocols, documentation standards, version control, and release management procedures.
  • Work with testing teams to support functional, regression, and performance testing strategies, verifying integrity and availability of systems.
  • Analyze and resolve defects using system logs, dumps, and debugging tools (e.g., Expediter) with senior guidance as needed.
  • Manage assignments and production support while meeting SLA commitments, maintaining high levels of system availability by implementing first time right.
  • Maintain documentation standards and provide options for improvement.
  • Participate in Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning and implementation.
  • Assist junior staff in researching technical problems and developing technical capabilities.
  • Participate in on-call 24x7 support rotation as needed for system outages or production incidents.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Hogan systems, core banking technologies, and industry best practices.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as business and technical needs evolve.

Key Relationships

  • IT Management: Provide status updates, seek guidance on technical challenges, identify areas for operational efficiency improvements, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Development Team: Collaborate with peers and senior engineers, participate in technical reviews, contribute to knowledge sharing, and adopt AI tools for development.
  • Business Units/Vendors: Support technical solutions aligned with business objectives, assist in issue resolution, and maintain effective communication with technical and non-technical personnel.

Qualifications

Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in related field is preferred. 

  • In lieu of a degree, combination of education and a minimum of six (6) years of related work experience is required that provides the necessary skills and knowledge to perform all the essential job functions.

  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving and multi-tasking skills desired.

  • Must be able to present system designs for user approval at formal reviews.

  • Must be capable to provide solutions to identified systems issues.

  • Minimum 5 years in Hogan Applications Development / IT Delivery Projects or enterprise infrastructure systems.

  • Minimum 3 years in Hogan module development, implementation, and support.

  • Technical Skills:

     

    • Proficient in at least one Hogan module (ILP, IDS, CIS, ODS, FSS, etc.).

    • Strong COBOL, JCL, Easytrieve skills; REXX or Assembler a plus.

    • Working knowledge of financial operations: deposits, loans, payments, ACH/wire, ATM/debit, GL reconciliation.

  • Experience with batch processing and API’s.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools for code development and review.

  • Preferred:

     

    • 5+ years with large-scale, high-transaction software implementations.

    • Experience with Hogan upgrades and applying AI tools in development work.

    • Knowledge of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning.

    • Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

    • Working knowledge of financial institution operations, including deposit and loan processing, monetary transactions, ACH/wire transfers, ATM/debit card activity, and general ledger reconciliation.

    • Demonstrates ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams, participate in code reviews, and support junior developers.

    • Background in production support, issue resolution, system design, and SDLC practices.

    • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity and code quality.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will not supervise employees.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.

*Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.*

 

Travel

Ability to travel to various worksites and be on-call is required.
